Holly

“Who is excited about the dancing and fun?” I asked my students.

In response, I got blank stares and restless movements.

“Come on, kids, we have put so much effort. Show a little enthusiasm.” My smile was more of a grimace.

“I do not want to do it,” Sandy admitted. Her lovely, innocent face was red. “It is a bit scary, ma’am.”

“There is nothing to worry about,” I reassured with a cheery smile. “After all the practice, I am convinced you are going to knock it out of the park.”

“Yes, ma’am,” she said like a robot, not believing my words.

Even though I talked a good game, I was fretting about the big day. In that function, there would be big donors. To keep running the school for children from tough backgrounds, we needed the money.

“Keep your chin up, and I will see you tomorrow.”

When I was out of the school’s building, I spotted James and another werewolf. They were following David’s instructions. It was irritating, but I gave them a wave.

James waved back. His eyes danced with humor. He knew I hated David’s overbearing nature.

After earlier embarrassing encounters, James and I had become friends. He was a good, loyal man.

I got into the red Ferrari and started the engine. David was terribly busy today, so he loaned me his car. Driving such a luxury machine was a dream. The tires ate up the miles effortlessly.

Even though it would be painful, I turned to my mom’s house. It would be worth it if I found answers.

When Mom saw me, she gave a long-suffering sigh. “I hope you are not planning to stay long, Holly. I have plans.”

She was always throwing me out of her house.

“It should not take long.” I brushed past her, knowing I would not be invited.

“If you are here to ask for money, I can spare only fifty dollars.” Emily, my mother, followed me as if I were about to steal something.

“Not here for your generosity, Mom,” I said, trying hard not to roll my eyes.

“Then?” She still looked doubtful.

“I want to know more about my family. I have never met my grandma or grandfather. Why is that?” My voice rose in pitch.

“Your sudden interest is strange.” Her eyes narrowed in suspicion and distrust. “They were not wealthy people.”

“I am not here for the money. I need to know. Just answer me, Mom,” I said.

“Your father abandoned you when you were a child, and I was left holding the bag.”

Did my mother ever love me? Looking at her unyielding face, it was hard to imagine. She clearly hated my existence now.

“Where is my father?” I asked. I would not let her derail me with her emotional jabs.

“Probably dead by now,” she said coldly. “He did not have the healthiest lifestyle.”

“Where are my grandparents?”

“They were never in the picture. For all I know, your father was an orphan.”

“Mom,” I said, losing my patience. It was obvious stonewalling tactics. She did not want to tell me anything.

“If you are here to bother me about the past I want to forget, then you can leave.
